Conor McGregor makes his much-hyped return to the Octagon on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. PT when he faces “Cowboy” Donald Cerrone at UFC 246. The welterweight bout is McGregor’s first UFC match in 15 months since he lost via submission to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018.
Thanks to prolific trash talk and a stellar 21-4 mixed martial arts record, McGregor gins up interest every time he fights. Big names come and go in the UFC, but McGregor has accounted for five of the top six PPV buys in UFC history, according to Tapology.
He’s also a lightning rod outside the Octagon, having been arrested for slapping a phone from a fan’s hand, earning close to $100 million in a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather and even launching his own whiskey brand.
McGregor likes attention, and he’s rewarded handsomely for it.

Why is McGregor vs. Cowboy a big deal?
As previously stated, McGregor fights have accounted for five of the six biggest UFC PPVs. Aside from that, McGregor is the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion. He’s currently the fourth contender to the UFC Men’s Lightweight title. His boxing match vs. Mayweather was the second-biggest PPV in history, with 4 million buys. That trails only Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao.
McGregor’s opponent on Saturday, “Cowboy” Cerrone, is 26-13 and the fifth contender to the UFC Men’s Lightweight title. He’s headlined six UFC Fight Nights.
Saturday night’s card also features UFC star Holly Holm (12-5), who shocked the world by handing Ronda Rousey her first career loss back in 2015 at UFC 193.
The fights start Saturday night at 7 p.m. PST. Early prelims start on ESPN+ at 3:15 p.m. PST.
